Simple System / Irish Flute
When Boehm's system flute took hold in concert halls around 1847, it left the older wooden simple system flutes behind. Not discarded exactly, but available. Irish musicians picked them up, and what those players built around the instrument became entirely their own. The reedy, focused tone of the Irish flute is something players spend years chasing. Through cuts, rolls, and ornamentation that gives the music its lift, the flute carries a voice both ancient and immediate, as at home in a late-night session as in the most searching slow air.
