Dizi
The dizi is a Chinese transverse bamboo flute with a small hole between the embouchure and the finger holes, covered with a thin membrane of reed tissue called dimo. When applied correctly, the membrane adds a buzzing resonance to the tone that gives the dizi its bright, penetrating character and sets it apart from almost every other flute in the world. The dizi appears in Chinese opera, folk music, and ensemble repertoire. Different regional traditions favor different keys and approaches: the southern style tends toward delicacy and ornamentation, the northern toward power and long melodic lines. Both call for real control of breath and lip position.
